Services

Repairs & Repointing

Crumbling mortar and damaged masonry don't get better with time — they get worse. We rebuild and repoint chimneys the right way, using materials and methods meant to outlast the house itself. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing once.

Stoves, Liners & Caps

Whether you're installing a new wood stove, fitting a liner for an existing system, or adding a rain cap to keep water and animals out of your flue, we handle it all correctly from the start — so you're not dealing with problems down the road.

Chimney Sweeping

Wood heat is safe heat — when your chimney is clean. We offer thorough seasonal sweeping to clear creosote buildup and keep your flue drawing well all winter. Most homeowners burning regularly should have their chimney swept at least once a year.

Our Work

Before-and-after repairs, installations, and chimneys we're proud to stand behind.

What We Do — and How We Do It

Every service we offer comes back to the same thing: work that's done properly, explained honestly, and built to hold up for the long run.

This isn't a high-volume operation cycling through jobs as fast as possible. We're a small, focused business — which means every chimney gets real attention, and every homeowner gets a straight answer about what's needed and why.

Wood Stove & Fireplace Insert Installation

Wood heat done right is one of the most reliable and satisfying ways to heat a home. Done wrong, it's a fire hazard. The difference is almost always in the installation.
We handle the full process: selecting the right liner size for your stove and flue, running it correctly, sealing it properly, and making sure everything meets safety standards before the first fire. Whether you're adding a freestanding stove to an existing fireplace or starting from scratch, we'll set it up so it performs the way it should — safely, efficiently, and for years to come.

Chimney Liner Installation

Your liner is what keeps combustion gases and heat contained as they travel up and out of your home. A cracked, deteriorated, or improperly sized liner is one of the most common — and most overlooked — chimney safety issues.
We install stainless steel liners sized correctly for your system, whether that's for a wood stove, a fireplace, or an oil or gas appliance. If your existing liner is damaged or you're upgrading your heating system, we'll make sure the new liner is fitted and sealed the way it needs to be.

Custom Rain Cap Installation

A chimney without a rain cap is an open invitation — for water, animals, leaves, and debris. Water alone causes more chimney damage than almost anything else, and most of it enters from the top.
A properly fitted rain cap is one of the simplest and most cost-effective things you can do to protect your chimney. We'll fit the right cap for your flue size and secure it correctly, so it does its job in all weather.

Chimney Repair & Repointing

Mortar joints are the most vulnerable part of any chimney. Water gets in, freezes, expands, and over time the damage compounds — loose bricks, cracked crowns, deteriorating flashing. Left alone, what starts as a repointing job can become a full rebuild.
We assess the full picture before we start, and we do the repair right: proper mortar mix, proper technique, proper cure time. The goal isn't to make it look good for a few seasons. It's to make it solid for decades.
If your chimney is showing signs of wear — spalling brick, white staining, mortar that crumbles to the touch — it's worth having it looked at before the next winter makes things worse.

Chimney Sweeping

If you burn wood regularly, an annual chimney sweeping isn't optional — it's basic home safety. Creosote builds up with every fire, and at sufficient thickness it becomes a serious fire risk. A clean flue also drafts better, which means your stove or fireplace performs the way it should.
We do thorough, careful work — not a quick brush and out the door. After a sweep, you'll know exactly what condition your flue is in and whether there's anything that needs attention before the heating season starts.
We recommend scheduling your sweep in late summer or early fall, before the demand picks up and before you need your system up and running.

Built on 40 Years of Craft

Kessel Chimney Services is a father-and-son operation rooted in the Pioneer Valley — and in doing things the right way.

My name is Dan Kessel, and I started Kessel Chimney Services to bring something that's harder to find than it should be: chimney work you can trust, from someone who will be honest with you about what actually needs to be done.
I trained under my father, Paul Costello — a master chimney mason and sweep with over 40 years of experience. Watching him work, and then working alongside him, taught me what it really means to do this kind of job well. Not just technically right, but built to last. The kind of repair that a future homeowner finds decades later and never even thinks about, because it's held up without a problem.
Beyond those years learning from my father, I've worked across related construction trades — which means I have a broader understanding of how it all fits together.
Paul continues to collaborate with me on the business today. When you hire Kessel Chimney Services, you're getting the judgment of two people who genuinely care the job gets done right.

What We Value

Honest work.

We'll tell you what we see, even if it's not what you were hoping to hear. If your chimney only needs a cleaning, we'll say so. If it needs real attention, we'll explain exactly why.

Quality over speed.

Production-pace work cuts corners in ways that don't show up for a few years — and then they show up all at once. We'd rather take the time to do it properly and never have to come back for the same problem.

Build to outlast everything else.

A well-built chimney should serve a home for generations. That's the standard we hold ourselves to on every repair, every installation, every job — big or small.

Based in Hadley, MA, serving homeowners throughout the Pioneer Valley in Franklin County and Hampshire Country — generally within about 30 minutes of Mount Warner. If you're not sure whether we cover your area, just reach out. We're happy to let you know.
